The mayor of Canada's capital, Ottawa, has declared a state of emergency in response to a week of anti-coronavirus vaccine protests in the city by truckers.

Stating that the demonstrators outnumbered the police, Mayor Jim Watson said the city was "totally out of control".

Watson said the actions pose a threat to public safety.

Truckers have paralyzed downtown Ottawa for more than a week, with their vehicles and tents blocking their way.

The so-called "Freedom Convoy" started with the government's requirement for truck drivers to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

Speaking to Canadian radio channel CFRA, Watson said truck drivers were constantly honking horns and sirens, throwing fireworks and increasingly "behaving insensitive".

"Obviously we are outnumbered and we are losing this fight," Watson said, adding that this needs to be reversed and their city taken back.

In the statement made by the Ottawa Municipality, it was emphasized that support at the government level was needed. Within the scope of the emergency declaration, more flexibility will be provided to the municipal administration for the continuity of the basic services provided to the public.
